Player Mechanics Design and UI Design for King Arthur's Return

Player Mechanics Design

During the Idealization stage the main Idea was constructed we were given themes for each specialization which we hard to stick with and for the design theme I have gotten the theme Dynamic One button and also a general theme of Monty Python that must be implemented in the game. The theme Monty Python was the main theme that the game must have and we decided to go in the route of a more surreal comedy 2D combat game where he utilizes his words in many different ways with also some hilarious dialog to fit the theme. One of the way in which he utilizes his sword is by sticking in on the ground then launching himself off it and use that same sword to stick on walls or damage flying enemies.

Through that Dynamic One button restriction I made 7 different actions that King Arthur was able to do by just utilizing that one button which was the left mouse click. Those actions were:

- Catapulting

- Moving

- Attacking

- Wall Jumping

- Picking up Items

- Throwing Items

- Ground Slam

Just by having all the above mechanics I was able to create different type of enemies and obstacles that the player can interact with and provide a dynamic flow of game play that challenges the player into using the above mechanics not only through battle but also platforming.

Player UI Design

The user interface (UI) plays a very important role in an fast paced action game. The UI must be clear, fast and responsive so the player does not get confused or questions themselves on how they were hit. So, for the UI of this game we wanted to focus on the pillar of simplistic but responsive UI which is crucial to a fast paced action game. The screen must be free of too many UI elements to focus the player on the game and not on the UI itself but also provide important UI elements in terms of animation for example when an enemy is about to attack or level for example if there is a intractable crate or platform to be present at the time to further focus the player on those elements.
